Food and Mood


Does food affect our mood? The words 'food' and 'mood' don't just rhyme, but they also connect! A person's mental and emotional well-being is impacted by the food they eat, in addition to their physical wellbeing.

In addition to causing laziness and mood swings, eating sugar coated food items in large quantities also increases blood sugar levels and causes nutritional imbalances within the body. Since school, we have learned that the body benefits equally from a balanced diet that includes all the essential nutrients. You may experience fatigue, weakness, nutritional imbalance, and fluctuation in energy levels if your body isn't receiving enough nutrient-rich food. An imbalanced diet can result in a weak immune system and depression. Balanced diet plays a very important role in building, managing and developing health conditions.

  • How and why?
  •  As you read earlier, imbalance contributes to a number of health and mental problems. In this article, we'll examine how some unhealthy eating habits affect mood and emotional wellbeing: -

    It all begins with Serotonin! For starters, it is a chemical neurotransmitter that regulates your mood in the human body. In response to your diet, these neurotransmitters interact with your brain to shape your mood. Additionally, one's mood is influenced by the good gut bacteria and bad gut bacteria produced by their bodies. To put it simply, the former builds positive energy, while the latter builds negative energy. Next time you feel sad or depressed, you're probably high on bad gut bacteria.

  • What to eat? 
    • Green leafy veggies would really do magic!

    Spinach, broccoli, lettuce, and fenugreek are all high in vitamins and minerals, including folate, magnesium, and vitamin B-12. These food items balance the nutritional levels in our bodies, improving moods and lowering anxiety and depression. 

    • ‘Berry’ it is!

    In times of stress, vitamin C does magic. Fiber and Vitamin C are abundant in berries such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. The Cortisol levels are regulated with the help of Vitamin C which further balances mental stress. 

    • Fats are not always Unhealthy.

    Fats are always associated with unhealthiness. But that shouldn’t be the case about healthy fats. Oily fish, avocados and olive oil are healthy fats having anti-inflammatory properties which help in preventing symptoms of depression and thus lifts mood.

    • Don't forget the liquid!

    There is no elixir like water on earth. There are many mental and physical problems that can be solved by water, regardless of whether you believe it or not. You probably have felt anxious about giving a presentation at times. Your first move is to grab a glass of water, drink it, and then begin. The magic of water works like that.

     A balanced diet may seem challenging if you've been relying on sugary food and diets for a long time but it's not impossible. A balanced and nutritional diet is a pathway to healthy life. A nutritional diet might impact a lot. The choice is yours. Rest assured, a pathway to making your life easy lies within !
